Run Tracking: Pace, Distance, and AI Coaching
Track your runs with GPS, get real-time pace coaching, and see your progress on an interactive track view. Get your personalized plan free in TRL/Active on iOS.
TRL/Active is not just a strength training app. It is a complete fitness platform, and that includes full-featured run tracking with GPS, real-time pace coaching, and a visually engaging track view that makes every run feel like progress you can see.
Starting a Run
You can kick off a run session directly from the TRL/Active app on your iPhone or from your Apple Watch. On your phone, just select a running workout from your plan or start a quick run from the home screen. The app requests GPS access, locks onto your location, and begins tracking the moment you tap Start.
If you prefer to run without your phone, the Apple Watch app works independently. It uses the watch's built-in GPS to track your route, pace, and distance. Your run data syncs back to your phone automatically when you finish.
GPS Tracking and Live Stats
Once your run is underway, TRL/Active tracks your position using GPS and displays live statistics throughout the session. The key metrics updated in real time include:
- Current pace: Displayed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile, depending on your preference. This updates every few seconds so you always know how fast you are moving right now.
- Average pace: Your overall pace for the run so far, smoothed to give you a reliable picture of your performance.
- Distance covered: Total distance in kilometers or miles, updated continuously as you move.
- Elapsed time: A running clock showing how long you have been going.
- Heart rate: If you are wearing an Apple Watch or a connected heart rate monitor, your current BPM displays alongside your pace data.
The Landscape Track View
One of TRL/Active's most distinctive features is the landscape track view. When you rotate your phone to landscape orientation during a run, the app switches to an interactive track visualization. This view shows a stylized running track with your position marked on it, moving forward as you accumulate distance.
Distance markers appear along the track so you can see your progress toward your next kilometer or mile split. The view also displays your live stats overlaid on the track, giving you a clean, glanceable interface that works well even when your phone is mounted on an armband or held in your hand.
This is not just a gimmick. Seeing yourself move along a track provides a psychological boost that a simple number on a screen does not. It makes the distance feel tangible and gives you a visual target to chase.
Real-Time AI Pace Coaching
The AI voice coach does not go silent during runs. It actively monitors your pace and provides coaching cues throughout the session. If your plan calls for a moderate-effort run at a 5:30 per kilometer pace and you drift down to 5:00, the coach will let you know: "You are running a bit fast. Ease back to your target pace."
Conversely, if you slow down significantly, the coach offers encouragement to pick it back up. The coaching is responsive, not nagging. It speaks up when your pace drifts meaningfully from your target and stays quiet when you are on track.
For interval runs, the coach handles the entire structure: calling out when to sprint, when to recover, counting down the final seconds of each interval, and announcing your split times. You do not need to watch a timer or remember the workout structure. Just run and listen.
Running as Part of Your Plan
TRL/Active does not treat running as a separate activity bolted onto a strength program. The AI plans running sessions as an integrated part of your weekly schedule. If your goal includes cardiovascular fitness, the plan might include two or three runs per week alongside your strength sessions, with the volume and intensity progressing over time just like your lifting.
The AI also considers the interaction between running and strength work. It avoids scheduling a hard leg day the morning after an intense interval run, and it adjusts running volume during deload weeks.
Whether you are training for a 5K, building your aerobic base, or just adding some cardio to a strength-focused plan, TRL/Active makes running a seamless part of your fitness journey.
