How Voice Coaching Works

Working out with TRL/Active is not like following a silent checklist. The app features a real-time AI voice coach that talks you through every exercise, every set, and every rest period. Think of it as having a personal trainer in your ear who knows your plan, watches your progress, and responds when you have questions.

Starting a Coached Session

When you begin a workout, you can activate the voice coach from the session screen. Once it is on, the AI takes over as your guide. It announces each exercise, tells you how many sets and reps to perform, and counts you through rest periods. You can keep your phone in your pocket or set it on a bench. The voice does the work of keeping you on track.

Push-to-Talk Interaction

The voice coach uses a push-to-talk system. When you want to ask a question or give the coach information, you hold the button and speak. This keeps the interaction clean and avoids false triggers from gym noise or background conversation.

You can ask things like:

  • "What is the next exercise?"
  • "Can you explain the form for Romanian deadlifts?"
  • "I do not have a cable machine. What can I do instead?"
  • "That set felt too easy. Should I go heavier?"

The AI listens, understands context, and responds with relevant guidance. It is not playing back pre-recorded clips. Every response is generated in real time based on your plan, your progress in the session, and what you said.

Form Cues and Tempo Guidance

One of the most valuable parts of voice coaching is the form guidance. Before each exercise, the coach can walk you through key setup cues and movement pointers. During the set, it provides tempo cues to help you maintain control through both the lifting and lowering phases.

For example, on a squat the coach might say: "Feet shoulder width apart, brace your core, and sit back into your hips. Control the descent for two seconds, then drive through your heels to stand." These cues are tailored to the specific exercise in your plan, not generic advice.

Rest Period Management

Between sets, the coach manages your rest timing. It tells you when your rest period starts, gives you a heads-up when you are almost ready to go again, and announces when it is time for the next set. This keeps your session moving at the right pace without you needing to stare at a timer on your screen.

Apple Watch Heart Rate Integration

On iPhone, TRL/Active connects to your Apple Watch to pull live heart rate data during coached sessions. The voice coach can use this information to adjust rest recommendations. If your heart rate is still elevated after a rest period, the coach might suggest taking an extra 30 seconds before the next set. This adds a layer of physiological awareness that most coaching apps simply do not have.

A Coach That Learns Your Workout

Because the voice coach has access to your full workout plan and your session history, it can make intelligent suggestions throughout your training. If you crushed your prescribed reps on the last set, it might suggest bumping up the weight. If you mention that something feels off, it can offer a modification or substitution.
