Log Your Meals by Speaking

Nutrition logging is one of the most powerful habits for reaching your fitness goals, but it is also one of the most tedious. Searching databases, measuring portions, and manually entering every item turns a 30-second task into a five-minute chore. TRL/Active makes it dramatically simpler by letting you log meals with your voice.

How It Works

Open the nutrition logging screen in TRL/Active and tap the voice input button. Then just describe what you ate in plain language. No special format required. Talk the way you would tell a friend about your lunch.

For example, you might say:

  • "I had a chicken burrito with rice and guac"
  • "Two eggs scrambled with toast and a glass of orange juice"
  • "Grilled salmon, about six ounces, with steamed broccoli and sweet potato"
  • "A protein shake with banana and peanut butter"

The AI processes your description and extracts each individual food item. It then estimates the calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat for each item based on standard serving sizes and common preparation methods.

Intelligent Parsing

The AI does more than simple keyword matching. It understands context and common food combinations. When you say "chicken burrito with rice and guac," it recognizes that as a single composed meal and estimates the tortilla, chicken, rice, guacamole, and any other typical ingredients as a complete item.

It handles modifiers and quantities naturally. "Two eggs" registers as a double serving. "About six ounces of salmon" uses the specified portion size rather than a generic default. "A large coffee with oat milk" adjusts the volume and accounts for the milk addition.

Clarification When Needed

Sometimes a description is ambiguous. If you say "I had a sandwich," the AI might ask a follow-up question: "What kind of bread and filling?" or "Was it a full-size sandwich or a half?" These clarification prompts help the AI give you a more accurate estimate without forcing you to describe every detail upfront.

The goal is to be accurate enough to be useful without being so demanding that you stop logging. A reasonable estimate logged consistently is far more valuable than a perfect entry made once a week.

Manual Entry and Editing

Voice logging is the fastest path, but TRL/Active also supports manual entry for times when speaking is not practical. You can type a description and get the same AI-powered parsing, or you can search for specific foods and enter them individually.

After the AI processes your voice input, you see a breakdown of each detected item with its estimated macros. You can edit any value if you know the actual amount was different. Added extra cheese? Tap the entry and adjust. This combination of AI speed and manual control gives you both convenience and accuracy.

Available on iOS and Android

Voice-based nutrition logging works on both iPhone and Android. The experience is consistent across platforms, so you get the same AI parsing quality regardless of which device you are using. Log meals from wherever you are, whenever you eat.

Why It Matters

The research on nutrition logging is clear: people who track what they eat consistently make better food choices and see better results. The problem has always been friction. When logging takes effort, people stop doing it.

By reducing the logging process to a few spoken words, TRL/Active removes the biggest barrier to consistent tracking. You finish a meal, spend ten seconds describing it, and move on with your day. The AI handles the tedious work of breaking it down into usable nutrition data.

Over time, your logged meals build a detailed picture of your eating patterns. The app can surface insights about your protein intake, calorie consistency, and how your nutrition aligns with your training. All of that starts with the simple act of saying what you ate.
